Americas: Are DMCs Still Relevant?

Meeting and event planners today can easily search out destination-specific activities, services, and vendors via Google, social media, and business travel guide sites. The Incentive Research Foundation recently commissioned a study to explore the implications of all this instant information on the traditional destination management company business model. Are DMCs still relevant?

The study, which was conducted by the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, included interviews with DMC executives and their meeting planner clients. Here are some of the study highlights, as presented by IRF Chief Research Officer Rodger Stotz at the IRF Invitational, held May 27–30 in Miami.

The strength/weakness/opportunity/threat, or SWOT, analysis revealed some interesting results about DMCs, which specialize in the design and implementation of events, activities, tours, transportation, and program logistics, as defined by the Association of Destination Management Executives International.
