What qualities are association CEOs looking for when they hire meeting managers? Deborah Sexton, president and CEO of the Professional Convention Management Association, moderated a session called “Associations in 2015 and Beyond—A Forecast From the C-Suite” at PCMA’s Convening Leaders meeting in January in Chicago, and asked the panel just that question.

Here are 15 skill sets the panelists—including Isabel Bardinet, CEO, European Society of Cardiology; Thomas Dolan, PhD, President Emeritus, American College of Healthcare Executives; Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE, CEO of APICS–The Association for Operations Management; and Karen Hackett, CAE, CEO of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons—gave.

1. Be customer- and member-focused, not silo-focused. “Have a passion for customer service,” said one CEO.

2. Work cross-functionally toward shared goals.

3. Have strong communication skills and be able to communicate with many different levels of staff and volunteers.
