Lufthansa has released the concept for its new Business Class, which will be available for the first time in 2020 with the roll-out of the Boeing 777-9.

Built around a newly redesigned seat, the new business class was developed with the goal of facilitating sleep, Lufthansa said. In the new seat guests will experience beds with a length up to 220 cm (86.6 inches) and a specially constructed back rest that makes it possible for the shoulder to sink in when guests are lying on their side. This construction keeps the spine straight and allows those that sleep on their sides the ability to benefit from ideal positioning, Lufthansa said.

The new Business Class seat was developed exclusively for Lufthansa, together with its customers, to which over 500 guests provided feedback during the development phases. Privacy and a high level of comfort for sleeping are two of the most important needs of passengers on international routes, Lufthansa said, and the new Business Class concept aims to address them.

Compared to its predecessors, the Boeing 777-9 has a considerably wider cabin. In the new Business Class, this space is used to increase the comfort level for passengers. For example, all passengers in the new Business Class will have direct access to the aisle. This is made possible by a 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 seat configuration. The new seats also provide customers with an increased amount of personal space, more privacy, as well as generous storage compartments and flat surfaces. Depending on their personal needs, passengers can choose between a variety of spatial configurations. For instance, they can choose to have an extended-length bed or a seat with twice as much desk space.

The new Business Class will also offer passengers the ability to control all seat functions, as well as the in-flight entertainment system, using their mobile device. Smartphones and tablets can be recharged at the seat using wireless technology. In the future, the seats will also incorporate larger screens in full HD.

Ahead of the new concept’s debut, Lufthansa said it is planning to introduce a number of new features in its currently existing Business Class this year. These new features include mattresses geared to aid in sleep wellness, which will be provided on long, intercontinental flights as of early 2018. Business Class passengers will also be offered new, lined blankets, and on request, they will also be provided with sleepwear, which has thus far only been available in First Class.
