united airlines

From a number of new nonstop flights — including a potential record-setter — to new aircraft news, here are the top developments in air travel impacting the meetings and events industry this week.

United to Set New Record With Nonstop Los Angeles to Singapore Flights

United Airlines has announced that it will introduce daily nonstop flights between its Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) hub and Singapore’s Changi Airport (SIN), effective October 27, 2017 (westbound), subject to government approval. The flight between LAX and SIN will set the new distance record for any airline operating a flight to or from the United States, at 8,700 miles, United said.

With the launch of new nonstop service between SIN and LAX on October 29, the airline will terminate service from Hong Kong (HKG) to SIN on October 27, and from SIN to HKG on October 28. United will continue to operate daily service between SIN and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Finnair Launches Seasonal Nonstop Flights From San Francisco to Helsinki

In line with its growth strategy, Finnair has announced that it has opened a new seasonal route from Helsinki to San Francisco beginning June 1, 2017. The airline will operate three weekly flights between both cities from June 1 to September 30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Thanks to Helsinki’s geographical location, Finnair’s new northern route to San Francisco will offer competitive travel times for customers from Scandinavia, the Baltics, Russia and many other European cities. San Francisco will be Finnair's fourth U.S. destination, along with New York, Chicago and Miami. The new San Francisco flight will be operated within the Atlantic joint business between Finnair, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia. The joint business offers customers additional flight choices, better connections and better pricing on transatlantic routes. Currently, the four airlines operate over 100 daily return flights between Europe and North America.

Finnair will also add capacity to Spain by opening a new route to Alicante with up to four weekly flights between March 26 and October 27. In addition, Finnair will increase its flights to Malaga with two additional weekly flights between June and July, increasing frequencies to a total of eleven weekly flights. Last month, Finnair announced new routes to Ibiza and Menorca for the summer 2017 season.

Interjet Adds Third Daily, Non-Stop Flight from JFK to Mexico City

Interjet has announced that it has added a third daily, non-stop flight between New York’s JFK airport and Mexico City’s Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez effective June 15, 2017. The added flight will fly on Interjet's A320 and increase JFK-Mexico City departures to four. Fares will start at $388.42 USD for round-trip service.

The new flight will depart JFK at 4:40 PM, arriving in Mexico City at 8:50 PM. A 9:25 AM departure from Mexico City will arrive at JFK at 3:25 PM. In addition to convenient departures and arrivals, Interjet offers more legroom between seats, inflight service that includes free light snacks and drinks, and no fees for checked baggage on specific fares.

Etihad Airways to Expand European Dreamliner Network

Finally, Etihad Airways has announced plans to boost its European Dreamliner network with the deployment of Boeing 787-9 aircraft to Amsterdam and Madrid.

The 299-seat Dreamliners will be introduced on year-round scheduled services to Amsterdam from September 1, and to Madrid, effective October 1, joining Düsseldorf and Zurich as the airline’s other European Dreamliner services. The 787-9 will also operate seasonally to Athens during the summer months. With a phased delivery of nine Boeing 787-9s this year, the aircraft are gradually being introduced on a number of international routes from the airline’s Abu Dhabi hub.
