A plan for nonstop flights between New York and Sydney, a new codeshare agreement and new routes for Alaska Airlines lead this week’s air travel news impacting the meetings and events industry.

Qantas Exploring Nonstop Flights From New York to Australia

Qantas is putting out a challenge that could result in the company’s first-ever nonstop flights from Sydney to New York and London, Travel Agent reports.

Qantas announced that it is investigating direct flights from the east coast of Australia to the two cities by 2022 in its latest earnings report. The airline has challenged Boeing and Airbus to give their next-generation aircraft, the 777X and A350ULR, the range to make these flights possible with a full passenger load.

“Any aircraft purchase would have to meet strict financial thresholds, but these direct flights would be revolutionary for air travel in Australia,” said Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.

The proposal would cut travel times by up to four hours on the Sydney - London route and almost three hours on the Melbourne - New York route.

Aerolineas Argentinas and Etihad Airways Sign Codeshare Agreement

On the other end of the partnership, Aerolineas Argentinas now can serve travelers through Etihad Airways’ network of over 100 destinations from its Abu Dhabi hub, via its Italian and Spanish capital gateways.
