Air Travel: First Nonstop Flight Between U.S. and East Africa

New nonstop flights and a new award for Volaris lead this week’s air travel news in the meetings and events industry. 

Kenya Airways to Launch First-Ever Nonstop Flight From East Africa to U.S.

Kenya Airways has announced the first ever nonstop direct flight from Nairobi to New York, becoming the first airline company to operate a nonstop service between East Africa and the United States. Kenya Airways’ entry into the U.S. skies is expected to attract more American tourists to the region.

Tickets are now available for the inaugural flight, which is scheduled for October 28 this year.

The airline will operate its Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a capacity of 234 passengers. The flight will depart every day from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi at 11:25 p.m., arriving at JFK International Airport in New York at 6:25 a.m. the following day. From New York, the flight will depart at 12:25 p.m. landing at NBO at 10:55 a.m. the following day.

Icelandair Announces Nonstop Service to Kansas City

Icelandair has announced seasonal service to Kansas City, MO with flights from Kansas City International Airport, commencing on May 25. Icelandair's Kansas City service will offer three non-stop flights a week to Iceland on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, with connections to and from more than 25 destinations in Europe.

The seasonal service marks the first time Icelandair will offer non-stop flights to and from middle America to Iceland and beyond. Bjorgolfur Johannsson, the CEO of Icelandair, said the service was added to benefit leisure travelers and open up opportunities for business, trade and foreign relations between Kansas City and Europe.

Volaris Airline Ranked Among Most Punctual in the World

Mexican airline Volaris made the list for being one of the most punctual airlines in the world, according to OAG, an aeronautical intelligence company.

The Mexican airline was placed 12th out of the top 20 spots worldwide with an average efficiency of 82.13 percent, however, they placed third out of the top 10 for efficiency in Central America.

Aeromexico ranked ninth in the top 10 spots for Central America. First place was awarded to Panamanian Copa Airlines with Brazilian Azul in second.

Globally, AirBaltic, Hong Kong Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines took the top three of 20 positions for most punctual airlines. This was the first year a Mexican airline ranked in the top 20 global positions.
